3. Prioritize transparency and explainability from the outset
The regulation requires AI systems, especially high-risk ones, to be explainable. This means not only that "it works," but that it is possible to show how and why a decision was made.
Tip: Invest early in incorporating risk management, change management, explainability, versioning, logging, and decision explanations, etc., which run throughout the entire lifecycle.
4. Collaborate: regulatory sandboxes & industry initiatives
The EU and several member states are currently developing regulatory sandboxes for AI, which are controlled environments where organizations can test and validate their systems in dialogue with supervisory authorities. This not only provides practical insight into how the law is applied, but also creates opportunities to influence how interpretations and standards are shaped in practice.
Tip: Join industry groups, research consortia, or pilot collaborations. This will give you both insights and influence.
5. View compliance as a strategic tool
Instead of viewing AI regulation as an obstacle, use it as an argument. To show that your AI is robust, responsible, and ready for the future. This builds trust, both with regulators and business partners.
