Visual status management in COMOS increases efficiency

A plant engineering company uses COMOS for detailed design of process, piping, electrical, and instrumentation. Documents and components are represented as objects in COMOS in functional or location-oriented plant structures. In larger projects, this can amount to thousands of objects representing an entire machine or plant. All these objects may have different statuses indicating the production phase they are in.

Challenges

There is a need to be able to present status information visually. This is to get an overview of the dependencies on associated components, subsystems and main systems. Documents, in turn, have status management for issuance, review and approval workflow. The visual tool also needs a search function to only show items for a specific status, as well as search for the person responsible for the status. You also want to be able to see if any component is part of an ongoing change.

Solution

It was natural to use the status management engine built into COMOS. Components can be presented for different degrees of completion during construction. This is because different disciplines work with the same components during the design phase. Components can also be visualized as purchased, assembled, tested, commissioned, etc. It is also possible to show which components are under change management.

Result

As the built-in COMOS status management function was used, a quick visualization is provided through a database search. The solution is easy to use and intuitive. It was also easy to configure. The status management has provided system-wide support between design disciplines and for project management and production to show the status of the plant and to show which components and documents are under review and approval process or are part of an ongoing change. This has helped to prioritize work efforts in a simpler way, clarify bottlenecks and create a good overview. Internal communication has been facilitated.
