Regulatory requirements slow down the pace of innovation

- in 42% of life science companies in Skåne

Regulatory requirements and automation in production are both keys to innovation and obstacles in Skåne's life science sector, according to a new study from Plantvision.

Skåne, January 14, 2025 – Strict regulatory requirements and the need for automation in production are at the heart of the biggest challenges and opportunities in Skåne's life science sector, according to a new qualitative survey by Syno, commissioned by Plantvision, a leading player in quality assurance, compliance, and digitization. Of Sweden's approximately 4,000 life science companies, 820 are based in Skåne, a region with great potential for growth and innovation.

The qualitative study, which interviewed 31 life science companies in Skåne, highlights crucial factors for strengthening competitiveness and driving innovation in the sector.

Insights that highlight the industry's biggest challenges and opportunities:

  • Regulatory requirements slow down innovation
Strict and complex regulations are the biggest barrier to innovation according to 42% of respondents. In addition, slow market approval processes and high documentation requirements increase workloads, limiting companies' ability to act quickly.
  • Digitalization offers great opportunities but also creates obstacles
22% of respondents highlight the need for digitalization to streamline production processes. This includes prioritizing the automation of quality controls and documentation, while many point to financial resources and time for implementation as significant barriers.
  • Skills - a catalyst for growth
26% of companies identify the need for excellence in validation and qualification as crucial for growth, with 13% of respondents also emphasizing the importance of knowledge in GMP and regulatory compliance for successful expansion. An equal number, 13%, cite a need for expertise in process automation and digitalization.

The right support opens the door to innovation
The extensive regulations in life sciences can be difficult for smaller companies to navigate without affecting their core focus on research and development. With the right compliance support, these companies can reallocate resources and accelerate the pace of innovation without compromising regulatory compliance.

  • Life science companies face a dual challenge: balancing strict requirements with the need for innovation and efficiency. Compliance and regulations must be integrated early in the development process to avoid costly mistakes later on. With our experience, we help companies choose the right systems and processes that support production and regulations, which strengthens their growth and competitiveness, says Cecilia Fällman, Business Area Manager for Compliance at Plantvision.

Running a life science company requires a balance between production, quality and regulatory requirements. By optimizing processes from development to production, companies can meet market needs while driving innovation and growth.

  • By digitalize automating manufacturing processes, life science companies can not only streamline their production, but also ensure high quality and faster delivery to market. With the right system solutions and cutting-edge technical expertise, we can help companies optimize their processes, meet regulatory requirements, and strengthen their competitiveness in a dynamic and demanding industry, explains Cecilia Jacobsson, Business Area Manager for Technology at Plantvision.
