Plantvision is at the forefront of securing the skills of the energy engineers of the future by ensuring that Sweden's plannable fossil-free electricity production is at the highest possible level and that no knowledge is lost.

"By bringing on board some of Sweden's, and Europe's, most senior individuals in the field, we will, through our mentoring programme, be able to draw on all the experience and knowledge that these individuals possess. The transfer of knowledge to the younger generation will dictate the conditions for how well we will be able to manage different energy systems in the future, not least concerning nuclear power," says Göran Engberg, Senior Advisor Energy Systems at Plantvision.

Climate challenges set a new timeframe for transition - the situation is urgent

The transition to, for example, fossil-free steel and electrification of transport is something that must happen in the near future in order to meet the climate challenges the world is facing. For Sweden, this transition would mean that about 150 TWh* of electricity would have to be supplied per year, a figure equivalent to about 15 000 normal-sized wind turbines or an estimated 20 nuclear power plants.

Plantvision has taken the strategic decision to actively participate in the transition that is taking place in Sweden, the Nordic region and Europe. With a solid background in process technology, digitalisation of production and an established safety culture, the company has a solid foundation to stand on. With areas of expertise such as project management, digitalisation, large nuclear power plants, SMR (small modular reactors) and large-scale energy storage, Plantvision's ambition is to establish a position and show the way forward.

"We possess the senior expertise that will be required to manage what will be an explosive development of robust, predictable fossil-free energy. And, through our mentorship programme, being able to provide the next generation with all this knowledge will be crucial. The collective level of knowledge of our consultants will be second to none," says Göran Engberg.

Timely supply of skills a crucial factor

In September 2022, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise released a report, "Start-up programme for new nuclear power". It describes how Sweden is in the midst of a major transition. The country's prosperity has largely been built on easy access to cheap electricity. In a short time, fossil fuels will be phased out, huge systems will be changed and Sweden will be a leader in the transition. In order to meet climate goals, while Sweden continues to build prosperity and growth, a cost-effective electricity system is needed that delivers fossil-free electricity when and where it is needed. Furthermore, the report describes the importance of skills supply and research and that this is started in time.

Plantvision's mentorship programme provides a unique opportunity for the next generation of energy engineers, who are offered the chance to take on mentors with at least 30 years' experience in energy systems and, more specifically, plannable, fossil-free power generation.

"The need for a predictable, robust and fossil-free energy system is both urgent and imperative. Plantvision's employees represent a huge skills resource and, with the mentoring programme, we can now ensure that the younger generation is part of this unique skills transfer. As a company, we must do what we can today to meet the needs of tomorrow. And we are well on our way to achieving this," says Plantvision's CEO, Simon Thuresson.
